Shakespeare In The Park: Measure For Measure

Please note each performance of Measure for Measure will go off sale through Lichfield Garrick Box Office at 3pm on the day (11am for both Saturday performances), but tickets will still be available on the door.

“Hence shall we see, if power change purpose, what our seemers be.” - Duke Vincentio.

Under criticism for his lenient rule, the Duke of Vienna decides to take a period of leave. He appoints the strict puritan, Angelo, to rule in his place until he returns. Angelo immediately reinstates Vienna’s harsh rules against immorality. One of the first victims of this crackdown is Claudio, sentenced to death for getting his girlfriend pregnant outside of marriage. His sister, Isabella, petitions Angelo for his life, but Angelo has a shocking demand of his own…

However, things are not what they seem. The Duke has stayed in the city, disguised as a Friar, watching events unfold from the wings. When will he return, and what is he really up to?

For this year’s production the company will take full advantage of the beautiful Italian Gardens at Maple Hayes School to stage an al fresco production of ‘Measure for Measure’ Shakespeare’s darkest comedy.  A razor sharp satire exposing hypocritical politicians, sexual exploitation and the abuse of power. Its message is as relevant today as it has ever been.

Access to Shakespeare in the Park is via Abnalls Lane, Lichfield (please follow signs). The audience entrance is approximately 1 mile along Abnalls Lane. Audience members walking to the site are advised that the lane is on an incline (when approached from Lichfield) and traffic can become busy.

Seating is on straw bales to complement the setting.  There is a bar on site and picnics before the performance are welcome.

This event is presented by Shakespeare In The Park, with Lichfield Garrick acting as a ticket agent.
