Poetry Open Mic Night

Poetry Open Mic Night

Word Weavers Welcome at the Lichfield Garrick

On Tuesday 9th January, 2024, the Lichfield Garrick will be throwing open its doors and welcoming the extraordinarily talented writers of our region to its very first creative writing open mic night.

This open mic night is part of the Lichfield Garrick’s twentieth birthday celebrations, and will be hosted by the theatre, and by Word Perfect Creative Writing – a local creative writing group led by Joss Musgrove Knibb.

The event will begin at 6.30pm, with recitations of work by members of the group. After this, the mic will be free for anyone who wishes to share their poetry, fiction or drama with the audience. Five minute open mic slots will be available on a first-come-first-served basis – just put your name down for a slot when you arrive.

Bring your friends and family, and enjoy an evening of creativity in one of our region’s premiere arts venues.

Word Perfect Creative Writing is a creative writing group, based in Lichfield. The group was started in 2022 by Joss Musgrove Knibb, a local journalist, author and editor.

Each guided session explores the mechanics of creative writing, and includes both discussion and brief writing exercises. The aim of each session isn’t to change the unique voice of each writer, but to offer up techniques and information that may help overcome obstacles and challenges. It’s also a lot of fun! Writing can be a solitary occupation, so the group has become a place where both new and experienced writers may support and encourage each other as they move forward in their writing journey.

Exploring poetry, fiction, non-fiction and drama in new and innovative ways, the group meets at Carl Knibb Art Ltd, 2A Quonians Lane, Lichfield, WS13 7LA.

The group runs three weekly sessions: Wednesday, 7pm till 9pm; Friday, 11am till 1pm, and Friday, 2pm till 4pm, with a maximum of ten people per session. Each session costs £10. There’s no need to block book, and all materials and refreshments are provided.

Joss Musgrove Knibb has spent most of her working life in the world of words. She is the former deputy editor of the Lichfield Gazette and Chase Gazette, and the former editor of Citylife in Lichfield and Citylife in Rugeley. She has worked as a freelance features writer for Staffordshire Life, and her work has appeared in national magazines and newspapers. She is the author of two non-fiction books: First Lines (Gazelle Press, 2014) and Lichfield in Fifty Buildings (Amberley Publishing, 2016). Her novels are published under a pen name, and all five have reached the Amazon top ten best seller list for their genre. She has appeared on Sky TV and ITV, and many other radio and TV broadcasters.
